Jigsaw. A mindful approach to PSHE.

We use a programme called Jigsaw, which introduces Personal, Social and Health Emotion though short weekly adult led sessions focusing on different puzzles.

We look at six puzzles in total, each containing 6 lessons linked to the EYFS. These are:

  • Being me in my world
  • Celebrating differences
  • Dreams and goals
  • Healthy me
  • Relationships
  • Changing me

Each session has mindfulness underpinning it and allows the children to observe their thoughts and feelings, make conscious decisions about their learning, behaviour and helps them to remain focused on the present moment, enjoy and thrive in it. We have a jigsaw piece called Jenie who helps the children work though the six puzzles of the scheme.

Using the Jigsaw Chime and the Calm Me exercises is an easy introduction to techniques which help children relax their bodies and calm their minds, reaching an optimum state for learning. The aim is to bring children’s awareness/attention to the present moment and in so doing let go of other thoughts that might be scurrying around the mind which distract from focusing on the learning of this lesson.

Each week you could ask your child what they have been learning about with Jenie and ask them to show you how they do “rainbow breaths” to help them recall and further embed their learning.
